Art, Design and Technology
Foundation Stage
In FS children explore art and design technology holistically through the FS curriculum. Through Exploring and Understanding Media and Materials, children explore what happens when they mix colours. They experiment to create different textures. Children understand that different media can be combined to create new effects. They manipulate materials to achieve a planned effect. Children construct with a purpose in mind, using a variety of resources. They use simple tools and techniques competently and appropriately. Children select appropriate resources and adapt their work where necessary. They select tools and techniques needed to shape, assemble and join materials they are using. Finally, the statements for the Early Learning Goal are; children sing songs, make music and dance, and experiment with ways of changing them. They safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function.
Within the strand of Being Imaginative, the children create simple representations of events, people and objects and they choose particular colours to use for a purpose. When working at the Early Learning Goal children use what they have learnt about media and materials in original ways, thinking about uses and purposes. They represent their own ideas, thoughts and feelings through design and technology, art, music, dance, role play and stories.

Across the Year the children have enjoyed a huge variety of designing, making and art activities from groups of children designing and making a topic table of Jack’s garden from our T4W text, Jack and the Beanstalk to making Sticklebrick mini beasts which then informed their clay sculpting. The large scale art work on mini beasts was hugely popular as the children worked in teams to create an enormous dragonfly, hoverfly and butterfly! The children made African jewellery and designed and printed their own costumes for their finale day as part of their work on the T4W text, Handa’s Surprise.

Year 1 and 2 Art
Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.
Year 1 have been involved in a variety of topic based art work this year from creating their own character for The Gruffalo T4W text to drawing with charcoal in the style of Lowry.

Year 2 have enjoyed a variety of opportunities to explore the work of famous artists using different media. As part of their healthy eating work, the children looked at the work of Archimboldo and then created their own piece to reflect their understanding of the natural elements of the world. As part of their African topic the children recreated landscapes of the Savannah using animal silhouettes. The children drew self-portraits and then recreated them in the style of Picasso on the computer using only 2D shapes.

Year 1 and 2 Design Technology
Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. High-quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation.
In Year 1 DT fits snugly with the Cornerstones topic work the children undertake. During the Dinosaur Roar topic the children designed, made and ‘finished’ clay dinosaurs. For the Enchanted Wood’ topic the children used a variety of natural and man-made materials to create their own magical woodland.

In Year 2 the children have had opportunities to design in greater depth to enrich and enhance those skills taught in FS and Year 1. To link with the topic of pirates, the children have been using cutting and joining skills to make a variety of paper toys from flying parrots to wonder turners (thaumatropes). Demi told Mrs Moir “This is amazing. It’s only paper and you can make a toy!” They also applied what they had learnt through George’s Marvellous Medicine to design their own potions.
