At Hempstead Infant School Geography is taught throughout the school as discrete lessons or by cross curricular teaching through termly topics. The National curriculum provides an outline of core knowledge around which our teachers develop exciting and stimulating lessons to promote the development of pupils’ knowledge, understanding and skills as part of the wider school curriculum. 

We teach the children by ensuring challenging, playful opportunities across the prime and specific areas of learning and development. In the Foundation stage the Geography curriculum is under the umbrella of Understanding of the World and is usually organised on a topic basis

In year One the children develop their geographical skills through termly topics which are designed to be practical and investigative.  By visiting our local woodland regularly, the children develop their observational skills and geographical vocabulary.  The children record local weather patterns and seasonal changes by first - hand experience and learn to draw and read simple maps and plans using simple keys. They learn to identify man-made and natural features of their local environment as well as developing a respect for their local environment.

In year Two the children develop their geographical skills through termly topics and discrete lessons. They begin to develop a deeper understanding of the UK and the wider world. They learn to name, locate and identify characteristics of the four countries and capital cities and the 7 continents and 5 oceans of the world. They do this by questioning, research and practical activities and develop a good understanding of how to read maps globes and atlases.
